Silica is one of the leading producers and processors of high quality round and
sub-angular whole grain sands, ground silica, micronized silica, and Aplite, an alumina
source used in the glass industry. Our products are used in a variety of industries
including glass and glass products, ceramics, paints, fillers and extenders, building
products, and foundry mold/cores and plastics - just to name a few. |

Headquartered in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, U.S.
Silica has processing plants in thirteen states. With plants, resources, and
regional distribution facilities located where our customers need them, we are able to
provide our customers with timely, expert technical service and support. This has
made U.S. Silica a major supplier in the industrial minerals market.
Product Information:
Foundry Sands
U.S. Silica supplies over 80 grades of round, angular, and sub-angular sands to the
foundry industry for molding and coremaking applications. Because of the high silica
content and ability to meet a wide range of sand specifications, our sands help foundry
customers produce high integrity castings, free of defects and with superior surface
finishes.
To further help our foundry customers, we have implemented a three-point business
strategy:
- Produce foundry sands close to our customers' plants and in the grain shapes and sizes
required.
- Equip, maintain and staff these plants to produce the highest quality sand possible.
- Provide research and development facilities staffed with experienced technical service
representatives to help foundries better utilize these sands.
Coarse Grades
These two and three screen round grain sands yield the highest permeabilities and contain
the lowest fines in the industry. They are ideal for the lost foam process and any other
application requiring this combination of high permeability and low fines.
Medium Grades
Offering high permeabilities and densities due to excellent fines control, these three and
four screen round grain sands are ideal for most core and molding applications in iron,
steel and non-ferrous foundries. They also demonstrate high strength in all binder
systems.
Fine Grades
These grades consist of rounded to sub-angular grains which provide high strength and
excellent permeabilities. They achieve superior casting finishes in all binder systems and
metals.
