Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium America

Type of Business:
Consumable Products

Company Profile:
In 1948, Kennecott Copper and New Jersey Zinc joined forces to form QIT for the purpose of developing the massive LAC Tio (Quebec) Ilmenite deposit. By 1950 a mine, processing plant, and related facilities together with a 43 km (27-mile) railroad had been constructed at Havre St. Pierre. At the same time construction of the first electric smelting furnace had proceeded according to plant at Sorel, and the first product was tapped from this furnace in October in 1950.

In 1987, when British Petroleum acquired the Standard Oil Co. oh Ohio, QIT became a wholly owned subsidiary of BP America. Subsequently, with the sale of BP Minerals in 1989, QIT became a wholly owned subsidiary of the RTZ Corp. PLC.

Product Information:
Purity and Quality
Sorelmetal is recognized worldwide as a very high purity iron charge material - a reputation deservedly earned during almost 40 years of consistent high quality production. The low levels of manganese, sulfur, and residual elements enable foundrymen to consistently produce high quality ductile irons that more than meet national and international standard specifications.

The low sulphur content allows efficient and economical treatment methods to be used. Together with the low levels of deleterious trace elements this overall purity reduces production costs. Likewise the achievement of casting soundness and integrity that in turn promotes low levels of defective, reject castings, is a most important contribution and cost reducing benefit of Sorelmetal.

As-Cast Delivery
The use of Sorelmetal facilitates the production of ductile iron for as-cast delivery, thus avoiding the necessity of undertaking expensive heat treatment in order to achieve the prerequisite properties. This is achieved as a result of many factors, but the extremely low manganese content of Sorelmetal is mainly responsible for the ease with which as-cast delivery can be assured - even in very thin section castings requiring ferritic matrix structures.

Lowering the manganese content through the use of Sorelmetal is invariably less expensive than using heat treatment to achieve the necessary properties. Further benefits of as-cast delivery include the great dimensional accuracy (distortion often accompanies heat treatment), reduced handling, and faster throughput.

Technical Service
QIT maintains a team of technical service personnel in North America, Europe, and the Far East to assist Sorelmetal customer sin the production of ductile iron and also to help develop the use of ductile iron castings.
